  Mental Power vs. Migraines

Having suffered from migraines for over 30 years, it is maddening to think that I actually may have been able to control most of them! When Bob Proctor told me, “You made your head ache and you can make it stop,” that didn’t put me in the best mood. Was he insinuating that I have brought on all of my headaches?

That is EXACTLY what he was insinuating!

In retrospect, I believe that my lack of vision and purpose had everything to do with my self-inflicted pain. When you don’t have a destination, any road will get you there. The pent up energy that wasn’t being put to use, festered and built up to proportions that caused pain. I felt unsatisfied, depressed, lonely, and I constantly questioned myself. I was never happy in a relationship. I always expected my primary love relationship to “make” my life better…to “make” me happy. What a critical error!

I can pinpoint the one pivotal event in my life that brought the awareness. I had signed up for a course by Bob Proctor, called, “Goal Achievers.” The course was 2 months long, during which I listened to Bob’s CD’s and worked in a training guide. It was monumental: I had no idea what was locked up inside me! It was only through diligent self study that I realize I can have anything I want, including freedom from migraines.  It also taught me to think for myself. I learned that I can accept or reject any idea. It taught me that other people’s opinions of me are none of my business.

Today, I teach Bob Proctor’s material. It is powerful, enlightening, inspiring and so much more. Today, I am off of my migraine medication!

  Preventative Medication

PREVENTATIVE MEDICATION?  DOUBTFUL…

Why is it that neurologists and doctors always want to give preventative medication?  I have suffered from migraines for years, and I didn’t know how to get rid of them.  Until now...

I have tried these medications, with very little success:

Over the counter medications
Vanquish
Excedrine
Percogesic

Perscription medications
Cafergot
Elavil
Depacote
Imitrex
Relpax
Amerge
Prozac
Birth Control Pills

Alternative methods of treatment
Acupuncture
Acupressure
Chiropractor
Massage
Biofeedback
Visualization
Exercise
Meditation
Magnets
Allergy shots
Topical treatments, such as Head On, Icy Hot, and Sports Cream
Aromatherapy
Herbs
Magnesium
Capsicum
Cold packs
Hot packs
Special pillows
Hot tub
Hats and sunglasses
Even Botox!

From experience, I think I know a little something about preventative medication.  Why is it so popular to treat the symptom and not the cause?  What actually causes migraines?  Of course, over the years we’ve heard they can be hereditary, allergy induced, hormones, stress, light or sound caused, certain foods and/or alcohol and/or tobacco can cause a trigger, low blood sugar .  But, helllooooo!  How about what is inside of our minds???

“Wendy, you’re too sensitive, too hard on yourself, you’re such a perfectionist, you can miss one day of school, you can miss one day of work, don’t try to do too much, don’t drink too much…”  I have used every trite excuse possible.

Go deeper... Why was I too sensitive, too hard on myself, and such a perfectionist?  Through self study, using Bob Proctor’s programs, I was unaware that I have genetic conditioning contributing to migraines.  My parents, my grandparents, and my great grandparents have affected my thinking and my self image.

Additionally, the environment around me affected me…television, childhood friends, where I was brought up.  My habits, conditioning and programming are lodged in my sub-conscious mind.  These caused me to be too sensitive, too hard on myself and to be a perfectionist.

I can now re-program because I am now aware that these are the causes of my migraines!.  Re-programming takes place through planned repetition.  Bob’s programs are the best cure I have found in the 30 plus years that I have been suffering from migraines.

I now dedicate my life’s work to being one of Bob’s LifeSuccess Consultants.  I coach people through his programs to help them find purpose, vision and goals.  It’s amazing what a little direction and re-programming can do for your overall health and lifestyle.

  Appearances or Truth?

Your spouse tells you that he/she isn’t happy.  Your boss says that your work is slow.  Someone cuts you off in traffic.  These events give you an uncomfortable feeling, any one of which could have you spiraling out of control.  But are these events just appearances or are they truth?

I spent a good portion of my life assuming the worst of situations.  And, events were never as bad as I originally thought they were.  Appearances were just that…they appeared to be bad.

What is the solution to these events?  We all have the intellectual faculty of REASON.  Reason is our ability to think, and thinking is our highest function.  It sets us apart from the animal kingdom.  So, why is it we rarely use this power to reason?  Why is it we are so quick to react in a negative fashion?

When you “think” about it, most people are simply reacting to events.  Does another’s action or response truly have any bearing on us?  Get ready – the chances are probably…NO!

Knowing this, it is possible that we could take a moment to evaluate the events that are causing us to feel uncomfortable.  Many of us remember as children being taught to count to 10 before reacting.  If there is one thing I’ve learned about controlling and eliminating my migraines it’s that I own my truth, and I evaluate events as appearances.

If you think before reacting, you will have better reactions.  Now, here’s something to think about:

2% of the people think

3% of the people think they think

And, 95% of the people would rather die than think.

Pretty disturbing -- and liberating!  I know that I spent most of my life in the 95 percentile.  And, I aspire to edge up to the 2 percentile.

In order to use your reason, try taking a day off from reacting to people and events.  Take ownership only of your own results.  Each and every one of us creates our own reality.  Keep your own counsel on your reality and let everyone else deal with theirs.

Negative responses feed more negative responses.  When that other driver cuts you off on the freeway try a smile and a wave, and then back off – they either didn’t see you or simply need to get there faster than you.  Your car, your life, and the lives of your passengers are far more valuable than their need to get there first.

By reacting negatively you’re giving that appearance – perhaps that person – power over you.  By thinking, reasoning, and reacting positively you’re giving yourself power over your own reality.

  Forgiveness

I am my own worst enemy.

I said too much, ate too much, drank too much, danced too much…then I use these reasons to beat myself up.

We’ve all been there.

And, to what end?  Being hard on ourselves all the time causes an uncomfortable feeling – or dis-ease.  This causes…you guessed it…a major league, full blown, lightning bolt headache!

We are conditioned to care about what other people think about us.  This is why we might feel bad about how we’ve acted in certain situations.

Here’s an attention getter:  Get over it and do better next time.  Just a nuance of change in thinking and the stress eases.  But, there’s no free lunch:  you have to commit to doing better!

If you are beating yourself up and consequently getting migraines, you need to do the same thing…get over it and do better next time.  We can learn from our mistakes.  And, mistakes do not define who we are... unless we repeat them!

Forgive, embrace, and empower yourself.  Study your untapped potential, disregard the things you have done wrong, focus on the things you are doing right, and change.  Negative causes dis-ease.  Positive causes ease!

  Spirituality and Creativity

Spirituality and how it relates to my creativity

As I understand it, Spirit is always for fuller expression and expansion.  Spirit is omnipresent.  It is everywhere.  Spirit moves to, with and through me.  To me, spirit IS creativity.  It is my spiritual essence that allows me to be creative.

I know that I live simultaneously on three planes:  the Spiritual, the Intellectual and the Physical.  Spirit moves to me and I to it.  When mixed with my thoughts and emotions, the thing I am thinking about will manifest itself on the physical plane.

When I look back at my life, I can clearly identify this process at work.  It was during the summer of 1982 that I crystallized a dream in my mind.  I had been in the high school musical the past two years.  My senior year I wanted the lead part.  I didn’t have a great singing voice, however I was not going to allow that to deter me.  My mom signed me up for some private voice lessons.  Over the first few weeks, my vibrato got better, I could project much better and I could almost carry a tune.

I remember laying on my bed, with head phones on, listening to Ann Wilson, of Heart, belting out “Mistral Wind.”  I was mesmerized and wanted to be able to sing like her so bad.  I visualized being on stage.  I wanted to perform.  I wanted the attention.  I wanted to make people happy.  I internalized the feeling of standing on stage, people looking at me, being entertained by me and how full and happy I felt.  My heart would pound and I would have a smile on my face.  I wanted the lead in the musical if it was the last thing I did.

My senior year of high school started and then
it was time for auditions for “Hello Dolly.”  I recorded my own accompaniment for my audition.  I sang, “A Time to Change” by The Carpenters.  I was surprised by the sound of my own voice as it reverberated throughout the cafeteria where tryouts were.  My classmates clapped and I felt great!  About a week later, it was the last day of school before Christmas break.  There was to be a list posted at the kiosk showing which student got which part.  The bell rang, I ran from class, down the hall to the kiosk.  My heart was pounding.  At the top of the list it said, “Dolly Levi  -  Wendy Hopper.”  I got it!  I got it!  I got it!  I guess you really become what you think about.

In the past year I have manifested another dream of mine.  That was to open a LifeSuccess training center.  I opened it in November 2008 and it has been a wonderfully rewarding experience for me.  Today I live my life with an open doorway to my spirituality.  I’ve never been happier.

  Where Are You Renting Space

Are you renting space in lack and limitation?  Are you stressed about the economy?  Are you living in fear?  Consider this:

We either create, or disintegrate!

This fundamental law shows us that we are either moving forward or backward.  Simply put, we are either reaching higher or sinking into the depths of despair.

When you are creating, you are positive and you are grateful for everything that you have.  Can you think of 10 things that you are grateful for?  For instance, you live in a great country where opportunity abounds, that the weather is great today, that you have a sense of humor, that you can help people.  When you are in this mindset, it is impossible for stress and tension to reside in you at the same time, because positive and negative thoughts cannot occupy your mind at the same time.

Now, on the other hand, if you are in a state of disintegration, chances are that your thoughts are negative.  Negative thoughts lead to stress and tension, which causes anxiety, which causes depression, which causes dis-ease…that’s right…disease.

We create our own reality.  If we rent space in lack and limitation, guess what we will get more of?  It took me a LONG time to realize this.  You see, I was looking for everything and everybody else to make me happy.  It wasn’t until I learned that I have to find my own purpose that my migraines began to recede.  No one else can find MY purpose.  If you are living without purpose, it’s like getting in your car and having absolutely no destination.  Any road will get you there.  Why get out of bed in the morning?  Why try to build relationships?  Why exercise or read material that will feed your positive mind?  How can you feel fulfilled?

This lack of fulfillment led me to disintegration.  I suffered through headaches every single day.  Then, Bob Proctor said to me, “You made your head ache, and you can make it stop.”  He said that people with headaches are not aware of what’s causing the headache.  Therefore, they take these little white pills that will temporarily take away the pain.  But, what’s the cause!?!  It’s so simple, if you can grasp it:  It’s your thoughts!

When you decide to live in creation, your thoughts will be positive.  You will be your own hero or heroine.  This is a place where you will take complete responsibility for your own results.  You have the ability to accept or reject any idea.  Do you ever allow someone else’s reality, as in mood, affect your own?  This is giving your own power away.  Most of the time, people don’t even know why they are in a bad mood or why they are taking their frustrations out by the way they drive, by their conversations, or by their moods.  Why on earth would we ever allow someone else to affect us?

I realize how challenging this kind of mental toughness is.  But, it can be achieved.  You see, we all have programming that sometimes gives us some pretty strange ideas.  This programming can be changed.  It takes a little bit of time, but with the help of a great LifeSuccess Coach, success can be yours!

One of my favorite quotes is from Henry Ford:

“If you think you can do a thing, or think you can’t do a thing; you’re right.”

If Someone Makes You Mad, Sad or Glad

I heard Paul Martinelli say once, “If someone makes you mad, sad or glad, you’ve been had.”

Back up the truck!  Was he serious?  Oh, yes…he was very serious.  When I look back at my history of migraines headaches, this would have been an extremely valuable point of view to have.  People made me mad ALL the time!  What I realize now is if I allow someone else to affect how I feel, I’ve just given away my power.

We have the ability to accept or reject any idea.  Just because you might have a different point of view than me, it doesn’t make you wrong and me right, or visa versa.  I have learned that there are factors in every person’s life that make them have a certain viewpoint.  I accept this and don’t judge it.

Have you ever had someone cut you off in traffic, or worse, have someone give you a nice hand gesture and have it ruin the whole rest of your day?  There was a time that I would have carried that experience around AND I would have gotten a headache over it.  In retrospect, it is so stupid to allow a situation like this to affect me.  I don’t know what that person is going through, or worse yet, they aren’t even thinking before they give me that nice gesture.

It is enough to go through life controlling my own thoughts, feelings and actions.  And, everyone is entitled to their own thoughts, feelings and actions.  I embrace this now and keep my counsel when situations get aggravating.  Now I just think, “Isn’t that interesting?”  It allows me to be much happier and pain free.

What Other People Think of You Is None Of Your Business!

Now, that would have been helpful information to have, say, when I was 12!  It would have made growing up so much easier.  If you think about it, every person is conditioned by their environment.  For instance, I was raised in Sacramento, California, born in 1965, of Catholic faith and a Democratic point of view.  Now, let’s say YOU were born in a different city, different year, different religion and a different political point of view.

Do you think that you and I might have a difference of opinion on a few subjects?  Most likely.  Does that make you right and me wrong?  Does that make me right and you wrong?  NO!  We may have a different point of view simply because you and I have been conditioned by different environments.

If you can really grasp this, it can change your life!  Have you ever wanted to do something so bad and then someone close to you tells you all the reasons why you can’t do it?  Of course, it’s out of love and caring that they give you their opinion.  What will they think of me if I go against the advice that they have given me?  What other people think of you is none of your business!

YOU have to do what YOU have to do.  Be true to yourself.  Let your imagination open up and dream of what you want your life to look like.  What might be appealing to your best friend, might not be appealing to you.  It’s okay!

It is my belief that there is a large portion of the population who are trying to control people and circumstances around them.  I’ve always thought it was enough to control the little voice inside my own head.  That is how it should be.  By controlling YOUR life, all else will fall into place.  Keep your own counsel…follow your own dream…and believe in yourself…even if someone else doesn’t.
